Wordle helper: find the word from your clues

Type the letters from your guesses and see every five-letter word that still fits. It also suggests a good next guess.

Quick answer: put green letters in their boxes, yellow letters in the box for the spot where they did not fit, and gray letters in the gray box. The list updates as you type.

How to use the Wordle helper

1. Green: put each letter you have in the right spot in its box.
2. Yellow: put letters that are in the word but in the wrong spot in the yellow box for that position. You can enter more than one letter in a box.
3. Gray: type the letters that were marked gray into the gray box.
4. Pick a word: click any word to copy it, then use it as your next guess. The suggestion line shows words that test the most common remaining letters.

How the helper reads your clues

Each clue narrows the list in a simple way. A green letter keeps only words with that letter in that exact position. A yellow letter keeps only words that contain it but not at the spot where you saw the yellow. A gray letter removes every word containing it.

Repeated letters are the one tricky case. In Wordle, a guess with two of the same letter can show one letter as yellow or green and the other as gray, which means the answer has only one of them. The helper does not model letter counts, so when a letter appears in both gray and yellow or green it keeps the yellow or green clue and ignores the gray one. If the list seems too long in that situation, check the gray letter by hand.

Which letters are most common in five-letter words?

We counted every word in our list of 8,636 five-letter words. The table shows how many words contain each letter, counting a word once per letter.

Vowels and a few consonants such as S, R, T and L appear in far more words than letters like J, Q, X and Z. That is why a first guess made of common letters usually reveals more than one with rare letters.

Opening words with the best letter coverage

Among the 5,665 words in our list with five different letters, the ones that cover the most common letters across all words are: ARISE, RAISE, SERAI. Rarer words also score well in this ranking, so check that you recognise a word before you use it. The ranking only counts letter frequency across our list. It ignores where letters usually sit in a word and it is not tuned to the real Wordle answers, so treat it as one reasonable way to choose, not the best possible opener.

Simple strategy for solving Wordle

• Use your first two guesses to test different common letters. A second guess with five new letters often tells you more than a guess that repeats the first one.
• Do not reuse gray letters. Unless you are deliberately testing a double letter, a gray letter cannot help you again.
• Move yellow letters. Place a yellow letter in a new position on the next guess so you learn where it belongs.
• Think about patterns, not just letters. If you have four green letters and several words fit, consider guessing a word that splits the remaining options rather than one of them.
• Check for double letters late. Roughly 34% of five-letter words in our list contain a repeated letter, so consider it when the list narrows to a few words.

About the word list

The helper uses ENABLE, a public-domain word list, filtered to five-letter words. It follows Scrabble-style rules, so it excludes proper nouns and most slang. The daily Wordle puzzle uses its own curated answer list, which is smaller and has fewer obscure words, so some words shown here may never be Wordle answers.
